It was not a drone plane that killed him, nor was he hiding in some cave in the hills of Afghanistan nor of Pakistan. Osama Bin Laden, the world’s top Al-Qaeda leader, was caught inside a fortified building 150 kilometers away from Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.
The story of his killing by US special forces reminds one of that scene in the movie “Kingdom” where an FBI team finally caught one of Saudi’s terrorists hiding inside one of the buildings. The discovery was never intended. It was when one of the movie’s characters discovered the withered hand of an old man. A bomber or a manufacturer of terrorist bombs usually show signs of a withered hand.
Based on accounts however, Osama Bin Laden’s location has been identified months before–in August—when the US elite team of counter-terrorists traced one of Al-Qaeda’s couriers, the leader’s most trusted. The team tracked him to where Osama was–a heavily fortified building in the middle of a busy town. It was only yesterday however, when the US president ordered the attack which killed Bin Laden.
Reports say the operation was conducted in the dead of the night. Attack choppers ferried the US special forces crack team in the site. They managed to swoop down on the lair, but not before losing one chopper from ground fire. The teams entered the compound and the building.
Upon entering, Osama’s companions tried to fight yet the US special forces superior firepower made resistance futile. Osama was shot in the head while it was uncertain how his other companions died. Osama’s son was also killed along with a woman who was reportedly made as a shield by one of Osama’s companions.
After the operation, US troops got Osama’s body and shipped it to an undisclosed location, something reminiscent with the way US troops did to that Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevarra. Guevarra was arrested alive yet was executed in the hinderlands of Bolivia.
Osama, as reports say, was not arrested alive. He was shot in the head. It was never clear whether he resisted or not, the reports are not as clear. What authorities want to emphasize was he was shot in the head.
Months before, when Benazir Bhutto was interviewed, she said that Osama Bin Laden has been murdered. There were no evidence to suggest that this. In September 2006, news of Osama’s death circulated. The famous leader reportedly died due to a water-borne disease.
This one seems believable.
After positively identifying the body, US authorities reportedly decided to throw Osama Bin Laden’s body into the sea. Muslim tradition states that the body should be buried. INstead of burying him in the ground, Osama was thrown into a watery grave.
Why was he thrown into the sea? US authorities were fearful that his grave would be turned into a shrine by his supporters and his fellow Al-Qaeda members.
The world’s most popular mujaheddin has been laid to rest.
